My work and personal life is keeping me really busy; I hardly find time to go out with my camera to shoot some photos, so i decided to take up "Project 52" (a photo a week) to push my self and take atleast one photo per week.  I am kicking off Project 52 with this photo of a beautiful tiny pink flower "Pentas Lanceolata"

Temple Tree Flower

Plumeria or Frangipani is commonly known as Temple Tree in India. Hindu's use the flowers from this tree to offer to their Gods and its a common practice to plant this tree near the Temple hence the name Temple Tree.   The English call it "Dead Man's Flower or "Life Tree" as its commonly planted in graveyards/cemetery's in some countries.  The `Temple Tree` is possibly the most recognizable and broadly grown amongst all the trees that can be found in India. These trees have some very sweet-scented exotic flowers. The flowers remain in these trees for almost throughout the year. This tree is also know for its amazing power to produce leaves and flowers even after removing from the soil, because of which Buddhists and Mohammedans think the tree as a symbol of immortality.

Pentas flowers normally have only 5 petals (as their name suggest, Penta = 5), this one is very unusual, it has 6 petals

Lalbagh Flower Show

Biannual flower shows are organized every year in January and August on the occasion of the Indian Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations respectively. The event takes palce in Lalbagh Botonical Garden, Bangalore. I'll post more photo's and information of Lalbagh in the future post now let me share few photo's from the flower show.

A theme is picked for every the flower show and the flowers are arranged accordingly. This years Independence Day flower show theme was Gateway of India, 1000's of roses were used to make this gigantic structure in the form of Gateway of India.

Red Beauty

A new addition to my little garden, I'm not sure of its real name nor its scientific name but the seller at the nursery told me that this is called "Cigarette Cupia" The coloration and texture at the tip of the flower looks like a lighted cigarette with ash. This is a tiny little flower which is about 1 inch in length and the plant grows about a feet tall from the ground.


Edited: I had the wrong spelling for the Cuphea, thanks to Rosie for pointing me in the right direction, after her comment i was able to find some information about this plant, here we go....


Cuphea Ignea (Ignea means fire in Latin), popularly know as cigarette plant, cigar flower, firecracker flower and sometimes mexian cigar flower.


Family: Lythraceae (Loosestife)
Origin: Native to islands of West Indies and Mexico
Light: Sun-part shade
Height: 1-3'
Spread: 2-3'
Blooms: Small, red, 1" long, cigar-shaped; thin pistil apears as the pencil-thin-sized flower matures, blooms year round
